課程概述

This class will provide preparation and practice for the use of English-language skills in both academic and real-life contexts and situations. The ultimate goal of this class is to increase communication ability—both in speaking and writing, but to reach that goal, students must WANT to improve their English and be motivated in pursuing every opportunity for learning. Students will be expected to speak informally to each-other and to their teacher (formal presentations—to the entire class, as well as in smaller groups—are also required). Also, your instructor will only speak English to you, so it is important that you understand what he is saying, and that you ask questions when you do not understand.

Reading is also a vital part of language learning, and you will be asked to read articles and build your vocabulary in-class and for homework every week. The class readings have been specifically chosen by your instructor to encourage class discussion and lead into writing assignments. Understanding formal style and producing academic writing will also be major focus points of this class.

課程目標
The main goal of this course is to acquaint students with a Western-style academic environment and encourage them to become self-directed learners in a more student-centered context. The majority of class time will be devoted to speaking and listening practice, but a major focus of the course will also be on introducing students to college-level writing and critical readings that stress how and why authors make different rhetorical choices. Reading assignments are designed, first, to immerse students in written language and, second, to develop critical thinking, reading, and writing skills.
課程要求
Grades will be calculated on a 1000-point scale: 200 points for your final researched argument essay with sources; 100 points for your outline essay (this will basically be a first draft of your final researched argument essay without sources—conferencing with me and creating an outline for your argument will also be part of this score); 100 points for your midterm (this will be two parts: a vocabulary review and a formal debate which will lead to brainstorming for your essay topic); 150 points for short essay writing (summary, critique, and synthesis reviews with quotations); 250 points for group activities (75 points for one discussion leader [give a brief summary/analysis of the essays and facilitate a question/answer session with the other groups for a total time of 15-20 minutes]; 75 points for the creative project final; 50 points for 1 group music presentation; and 50 points for 1 group media-listening presentation [present roughly 15 minutes of media from CNN, BBC, New York Times, You-Tube, etc… and create a corresponding activity or questionnaire for the class for a total time of 20-30 minutes]; 100 points for class participation; and 100 points for homework and reading quizzes.
